I'll Retire When I'm ____

I've talked before about my affinity for the show Mad Men...in my opinion the last great drama of TV's golden age.

Alpha male Don Draper struggles to stay on top in the high-pressure world of Madison Avenue advertising agencies during the '60's.

Mad Men was about nostalgia...like Big Bands and jazz.

It was a throwback to the era of three martini lunches. Not sure if I could even function anymore after three martinis. Lol

It was about sales.

And when I think of sales...I think of David Ogilvy (dubbed the "Father of Advertising") who in my mind was the quintessential Mad Man and the original Don Draper.

One of my many favorite Ogilvy quotes is this:

"Hard work never killed a man. Men die of boredom, psychological conflict, and disease. They do not die of hard work."

Which brings me to the topic of the day...

To retire or NOT to retire... that is the question.

I'm not talking about whether or not you're ABLE to retire...we all want to be in the position to retire at some point.

I'm referring to whether or not you WANT to retire.

Take Warren Buffett for example.

He's 87, a multi-multi-billionaire and still has no plans to retire anytime soon.

In fact, he said that if he quit today...the thought of spending his whole week planning his haircut is certainly not his idea of living.

Gotta love it!

When asked how he feels about going to the office...he says, "I'm tap dancing to work every day. There's nothing more exciting than to get there. It doesn't get better than that."

What advice does he give young students?

"I tell the students when they come to see me....Take the job you would take if you didn't need a job...[You] want to be doing something you would do if you didn't need the money."

It really hit home the other day when I was talking to a buddy who's already retired and spending every day on the links.

He asked me when I was planning on retiring and building on my lot where a bunch of us all bought lots two decades ago...and I honestly didn't have an answer.

As much as I love golfing...I really enjoy doing what I'm doing.

Selling, wheeling and dealing, building relationships, building an empire.

And when working is no longer fun...then I guess I'll think about retiring 🙂

Not only do I like Warren Buffett's attitude about retirement...his secret to staying young is the "Real Thing."

He wakes up ready to take on the world with boundless energy by eating like a six-year-old.

+ He drinks about 5 cans of Coke a day...he says he's 1/4 Coca-Cola.

+ One of those cans of Coke washes down a breakfast of champions...a can of Potato Stix or a bowl of chocolate chip ice cream.

+ Munches on hard candy all through the day.

+ Uses an ungodly amount of salt on his food.

+ Eats a limited amount of vegetables.

Why eat like a six year old? Buffett claims he "checked the actuarial tables, and the lowest death rate is among six-year-olds. So I decided to eat like a six-year-old.”

My take on all this? He's got a healthy sense of humor, doesn't take himself too seriously, and loves to bull-shit.

My kinda guy.

I think I want to be like Warren Buffet when I grow up 🙂
