What's Your Vibe?

Two senseless, devastating deaths by suicide in less than two weeks...

Anthony Bourdain. Celebrity chef, author, host of CNN's Parts Unknown, father to a young daughter.

Kate Spade. Fashion designer, known for women's handbags, mother to a young daughter.

They both had "everything" if everything means money, acclaim, prestige.

We thought we knew them.

They chose to give up.

And that is disheartening.

Which brings me to a bit of advice I hear passed on by coaches and marketers that is equally disheartening...

Fake it 'til you make it.

Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade couldn't fake it anymore. They needed help.

And yes, the actions they took were extreme...and not what I want to talk about here.

I'm talking about what so many marketers and business owners do without realizing it.

But you can just tell.

They're begging for attention. Desperate to make a buck. Trying way too hard.

So do a quick check on how your reactions are coming off.

Is your vibe more like...

"Please, please pick me."

"A call to go over your launch strategy on Saturday night? Sure. it's my son's birthday, but they can start without me."

"What's that? Can you skip next month's payment? You've got some unexpected expenses? Sure, sure...I understand."

"Texting works better for you than taking out a support ticket? No problem."

Or is it more like this...

"The price of the work is the price of the work. I'm worth it and so are you."

"I'd like to prove to you that I'm the best at what I do."

"But I only work with certain people/companies."

"And yes, we have people waiting in line."

"And, oh by the way, I'm not cheapest in town."

"And when you do become a customer, here are the rules we play by."

Which is it?

Well, if you're honest...I'm guessing the first.

And I know what you're probably thinking:

"Art, buddy...easy for you to talk. But when the end of the month is a week away and sales are slow...it's tough to pretend customers are waiting in line, knocking down the door."

Who said anything about pretending?

I can't get on board with guru's spouting "fake it 'til you make it" advice...

It doesn't feel right. I have enough trouble trying to be me instead of passing myself off as someone else.

Here's what's easier to pull off...hustle.

Pick up the phone and make the calls. Fill your calendar. Keep your sales guys busy.

No need to put on a front when you're in demand.

No need to twist arms...drop prices...give away your time for a testimonial.

When your pipeline's full, you can afford to be the real deal with people.

And conversations like this will come easy...

"Yeah, $10 K is a big investment. You need to think it over."

"Too steep right now? No worries, we're not going anywhere. Come on back when you're ready."

No bluffing. No desperate measures. No getting feelings hurt when someone wants to sleep on your offer.

Because your pipeline will be full!

And when you're pipeline is full...the less you care, and the more you make.
