Ever hear of a "showrunner"?
Newfangled term for me until recently.
Evidently a showrunner is the person who has ultimate creative-control of a TV series.
The showrunner is head writer...
...and executive producer
...and script editor.
Outranking even the director.
When it comes to the making of a TV show, the showrunner is at the top of the food chain...and has quite the impact on whether the show is a "hit" or "miss."
The job is part creative and part management.
Think about that:
First...that's working with two totally different parts of the brain.
Second...it's sorta like being a parent vs being a babysitter.
Suddenly that baby is ALL yours. You can't just leave at six o'clock when mom and dad come home to take over.
You're pretty much responsible for it all.
+ Working within the budget (even in television, there's a limit)
+ Making sure everyone is heard and feels part of the team (you're a leader, not a dictator)
+ Having a clear vision of where you want the show to go
Are you thinking what I am??
You might have a staff or a team that supports you and does all you don't want to do...or shouldn't be doing.
But in the end, the buck stops with you.
If anything goes wrong with a customer, guess who gets the blame?
Yep...you know it.
And just like ratings are a measure of a TV show's success...reviews do the same for you.
If you get some bad reviews, you can't just reach out to the reviewers and ask them to change their review.
Whoa, Art...all of a sudden, you're making it sound like being a business owner is a gig I took on that's nothing short of lunacy.
Nah...you got this.
If owning a business was easy, everybody'd be doin' it.
If running a TV show was easy, showrunners would be a dime a dozen.
You know what sounds hard to me?
...being an emergency room nurse.
...working in a meatpacking plant on third shift.
...taking care of and home-schooling five kids.
Know what the toughest job of a business owner is?
Whether you're a digital marketing agency.
Or you do pool installations.
Or you're in the home construction, remodeling, plumbing, medical, consulting industries. The list goes on.
You still need a team. And someone's gotta be the showrunner.
Not how you want to be spending your time and energy?
Make today a good one!
