That first cuppa coffee in the morning...
Kind of eases you into semi-consciousness.
Mid-way through the second cup...
You start to feel energy flowing through your veins.
And by the time you drain that cup, you're ready to kick a** and take names!
Nothing like a good strong cup of American joe...
Oh but there is!
If you've ever had a cup of Turkish coffee, you know exactly what I'm talkin' about 🙂
Growing up, anyone who came for Sunday dinner at our house knew.
When coffee was served after the table was cleared, they were either in for a treat or a shock...
"Turkish coffee" isn't your typical American coffee. It's not even like a strong Starbucks. It's not a type of coffee...
...it's all about how it's prepared.
It's kinda sorta like espresso.
My mom and aunts would add enough cold water to a special copper pot for about three or four demitasse-sized cups at a time.
Coffee beans that have been ground to a fine powder are measured and added to the pot, stirred and slowly heated. They'd usually add a little sugar as well.
When the coffee comes to its first boil, you pour some of the creme (or foam) that has come to the top into each cup, dividing it so everyone gets some of the "good stuff."
Put the coffee back the heat and bring it to a second boil and top off the cups.
Oh my god, the taste...it's rich, strong, something to savor.
I actually have no idea how to exactly make it because the women did it...I know sounds really sexist but that was how it was.
And way, way back...women looking to get married were judged by prospective husbands on their coffee making skills lol
How would that go over with you? haha
After we finished our coffee, even as kids...we'd put the saucer on top of the empty cup, flip it over and let it rest a minute.
Then my dad would read the dregs left inside the cup and on the saucer for everyone...because the rule is that you NEVER read your own cup.
Drinking Turkish coffee was definitely an experience.
Another one of those things I took for granted growing up and think about more now that my dad has passed.
So it hit me...creating a really great cup of Turkish coffee is a lot like growing a business.
+ It requires patience. Did you realize that the startup phase for any business can last for up to four year? It's the riskiest phase of the whole lifecycle of a business.
But if you can make it through those first few years when you're sometimes on the brink of exhaustion...
When you ask yourself what the hell you've gotten yourself into...
When nothing you try seems to work...
The hard work will pay off. Stay the course.
Turkish coffee is not meant to be thrown into a travel mug on your way out the door...
And neither is building a business that will stand the test of time.
+ It requires skill. To be perfectly frank...at some point, we all need a mentor. Someone to show us the ropes. Someone to share their experience and shorten our learning curve.
There are days when I'm on the phone with my business coach for an hour. Sometimes a week goes by without a Hail Mary call for advice.
When I started my mortgage business, I lucked out. I'd been working in another mortgage firm for a couple of years...learned the systems and processes.
And when I was ready to open my own shop, and a few loan officers and secretaries were unhappy and wanted to come with me. So I pretty much had a staff in place from the get-go.
But when starting both our marketing agency and the properties biz? Totally different animal.
I needed help from someone who'd already cracked the code and had the skill sets dialed in already.
Making a good cup of Turkish coffee is more complex than popping in a Keurig K-Cup.
It takes practicing and perfecting strategic methods and processes that have already been proven to work.
It requires skill to develop the nuances that make what you offer unique.
+ It requires the right tools. My mom's copper pot, demitasse cups, coffee grinder that can grind the beans fine enough, and the right coffee beans are all critical to making the coffee properly.
And Infusionsoft is a tool...a powerhouse of a platform but that's all it is. It needs the finesse and skill and the proper strategies to achieve big results.
