The End Of An Era...

Just when I think my style of jeans and my slang are finally "on point" my nieces tell me:

"Sorry not sorry, Uncle Arthur. The struggle is real. But at least you're chill."

Evidently I'm not as "on fleek" as I thought 🙂

And by the time you read this...Millennials will probably have changed their entire vocabulary yet again.

The pendulum for them swings fast and wide.

Even with art, music, literature, culture...no matter what area you look at, the pendulum will swing further and further until it finally crests.

And then it'll slowly begin to reverse its direction.

You remember history class.

...the Renaissance was all about perfection and balance. You know, the nude statue of David? No normal dude can live up to that physique.

...the pendulum swung to the other side and the Baroque era gave us emotion, drama, exaggeration.

...then the Classic era returned back to reason and intellect. Symmetry.

...the Romantic era starts the emotional swing upwards again.

...cresting with World Wars I and II and the birth of Jazz. Improvisation at its finest.

...the 60's and 70's? What can you say other than drugs, sex, long hair and rock-n-roll.

Anti-establishment. Rebellion.

No Kale. Plenty of Twinkies and Wonder Bread.

Second hand smoke.

Latchkey kids.

No seat belts or helmets

It's a wonder we Baby Boomers made it out of that era alive. Lol

Times will always be a-changing.

And it's not always easy to tell which direction trends are moving...or if they're moving at all.

The marketing pendulum has slowly begun to reverse its direction.

When Cheryl and I jumped head-first into the Internet Marketing world about twelve years ago, it was all about "who" you were following.

It was the Era of Guru Marketing.

I won't drop names here...you know them.

They made up the Rat Pack of online brotherhood.

They held "conferences" that felt like rock concerts.

They all promoted each other's product launches where affiliate contests felt rigged and incestuous.

Well, the tide is shifting.

The era of guru marketing is on its last leg.

Time to move into a new era.

Don't get me wrong...the OG's (original gurus) are still out there. And they're still riding the wave built on past years' residuals and reputation.

They're leveraging it for all it's worth right now, but it's worth less and less every day.

If they had to start their business TODAY from scratch...

...would they run their business the same way they are today?

...the way they've been teaching others to do it for over a decade?

My opinion is that they'd either completely fail or they'd only have a small sliver of the impact they currently have.

I still follow some of them.

And many seem to be floundering. Making money but just treading water with their list... milking it for what's worth.

Not teaching anything new.

Tides change...they sneak up on you.

Control what you can in your business.

Create the systems and procedures to leverage your time and money.

Know that change is a given.

Anticipate the shifts in tides and the pendulum swings to keep from being caught off guard.

Plan for the new era of marketing.

Later!
