The Barber and Dr. J

/By: bmsteam

- March 9, 2018 -

It was just a normal day. Sitting in the barbershop in Philly...getting a trim and shooting the breeze with Lou my barber.

Just me and Lou that day.

The door opens...and in walk Julius Erving and Moses Malone!

Dr. J and Big Mo in the house lol

So Lou introduces me and all I can come up with is: "So you gonna beat the Cetics and the Lakers?"

Geez, Artie!

Moses says, "Hell ya, bro!"

And with that...we were just three dudes sitting there gettin' a shave and a trim.

The last time I was with those guys was at Julius's retirement party at Le Bec Fin.

And with that, an era was over...

The late Dave Zinkoff, the Sixers' long-time P.A. announcer, calling Dr. J's name with the unmistakable cry of "Julius Errrrr-ving!" would no longer be heard.

I moved from Philly to Pittsburgh shortly after and lost touch with Julius and Moses.

But I remember Dr. J as just a regular, decent guy with integrity.

And had it not been for my barber Lou, we probably never would have crossed paths.

Those were some years and good times 🙂

It's all about connections...

I've learned over the decades that business is all about relationships...face to face, human to human.

Lasting relationships that are mutually beneficial to both parties.

Cheryl and I mentored with Larry Benet, known as "The Connector" several years ago and learned a lot from him. Like...

+ Find out what's relevant and what's important to someone else.

+ Ask what they like to do for fun.

+ What are they most excited about in life? Might be business...or might be personal.

+ What do they have going on in their business?

And then hopefully you've got some things in your network that you can trade...that you can offer up as value.

The key is that you offer that value well before you might ever need something from them.

It could be an introduction to someone they don't know - but you do.

Could be some resources that might help them...and it doesn't have to be about business.

It's all about connecting the dots.

It's about strategically spending the limited time, energy, money, resources you have with people who are experts at what they do.

People who I can connect with other people...who can connect with their connections...and on and on.

...all to build up your connection currency.

It's like 1+1=11.

You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want. - Zig Ziglar

And when you culture the right relationships and freely share what you know with people you know...it's a win, win for everyone.

Side note...people, this doesn't happen by be chained to your computer all day.

'Nuff said.

I've always felt that good things come back to you if you give more than you take.

And if we can help you with your business, just go here...you know the drill 🙂

Have a terrific weekend! Relax, recharge...and when in doubt, drink lol
