Stop Doing What You Do Best

I'm gonna to try to keep this short(er) today because to be perfectly honest, I feel like sh*t.

I never get sick and somehow picked up a bug and just can't shake it.

Gin and whiskey don't seem to be fixing it. (I'm kidding, people!!)

So what I really want to share with you today is doubly appropriate...because I need to swallow this pill myself.

For years...I had been taught, believed, and aspired to the idea that to be most productive is to do what I did BEST and train others to do everything else.

...all the tasks I hate to do.

...all the stuff I suck at.

...all the jobs that don't need my personal attention.

...even non-work related things like a house-cleaner.

All so that I have more time to do what I do best.

Being the contrarian that I am...the more I think about this logic, the more it seems "off."

All you're doing is freeing up time to DO MORE!

Are you following me?

As I'm sitting here sick as a dog, I'm eternally grateful that my assistants and team are handling all the things I used to do myself.

But in the past year...I am working just as many hours!

Except I'm only doing what I do BEST. What I love MOST.

Are you seeing the irony of that?

What I've essentially done is given myself a really nice promotion.

Upped my pay grade.

Changed my job description...but it's still a full-time JOB.

If you (and I'm talking to myself, too) think that training a few people to do the tasks that you're not good at...

...and the tasks you don't want to do

...and the tasks that aren't highly-skilled or highly-valued enough for you to do has made you more productive?

Well, I've come to the conclusion that real productivity (and the freedom we all want) is not about DOING at all.

It's not about reducing your workload by a few hours a week so you can get more done (although that's a happy by-product of the first baby steps).

It's not about time management.

It's about eliminating the tasks that most experts say you should DO more of.

That's where the real power comes from.

STOP doing what you do best.

It's about liberating YOU so that your business works better when you're not even there.

So that it works better when you take 2 weeks or even 2 months off and nobody can reach you.

So that if you ever have a helluva week being sick, you can bitch and moan and barf without feeling the pressure of falling even further behind.

Everything you do should be done by someone else.

Hard pill to swallow, huh?

The most profound things usually are.

I'm chokin' on it myself. But going to write out my own prescription now.

Here's where you can get your Rx filled.
