Perfectionists Can't Scale

I love the concept of Good - Better - BEST.

Good (version 1.0) just gets something out the door.

+ A new product or service.

+ A new internal process for your office manager or a virtual team that you're trying to document.

+ A new website that showcases your snazzy new branding and services.

+ A basic campaign to collect new leads.

The idea of "good is good enough" is a perfectionist's nightmare.

A perfectionist will literally break out in a cold sweat at the thought of shipping something that isn't perfect.

I'm not talking about attention to detail...that's critical in certain scenarios.

I'm talking about paralysis by analysis...it's cripples the ability to scale.

So it's a mindset switch that does need to happen...or great ideas never get beyond the planning stage.

Better (version 2.0) comes after version 1.0 has been proven to have legs...and only then.

+ 3/4 of all new products or services never earn enough to have paid for the development.

If no one is willing to pay for your "cool idea"...it's either because 1) it didn't address a big enough pain point or 2) the packaging/positioning is off.

Tweak version 1.0 to see if you get any takers before throwing away more development funds.

+ Let your team run through a few projects with the new process.

Give them time to "live" with it for a week or two and get their feedback before spending hours making it look pretty and printing it out in technicolor.

+ Get some eyeballs on the website before paying your developer to make continual edits.

Trust me, you can easily get to a place where the edits never stop.

Get enough feedback to warrant a change...if feedback is based on only one or two viewers, it's just personal preference.

+ Run a test group through the new campaign and see where it can be improved based on unexpected "gotcha's."

A while ago, I 'fessed up that an email confirmation campaign went totally off the rails in a way we didn't expect. We stopped it and made a complete pivot before irreparable damage could be done.

BEST (Version 3.0) is perfecting it for prime time...not everything will make the cut.

And by prime time, I mean putting advertising dollars in play to promote your new product or service once it's been proven as viable...

Or setting up Facebook retargeting to keep you in front of leads collected in your new lead campaign...when those optins aren't engaging with your followup emails.

In a small and growing business, there’s rarely budget for unnecessary expenses. You run lean and you run fast.

We're all hustlers.

And many of us are Type-A entrepreneurs who focus on making something perfect...

And priorities get screwed up when the important income-producing activities get ignored at the expense of better...better...better.

OK, rant over. Gotta get stuff done 🙂
