Is Nothing Sacred Anymore?

"Most conversations about social media just nauseate me."

Being a long-time follower of Dan Kennedy, I'm not surprised in the least that he made this comment.

He goes on to say that in his opinion, Facebook (which interestingly enough hit its stride right about the time of the economic crash of 2008) is a gargantuan productivity suck.

And that its energy-wasting distractions bleed your focus and leave you broke.

So, tell us what you really think, Dan!

I agree with him so I guess that makes us both anti-social dinosaurs on the brink of extinction.

There's no way on God's green earth that I'll ever post what my dinner plate looks like before starting to eat...

...the "cute" thing my dog just did

...the 2 buck discount I got at Sam's Club

...the obligatory "I'm on the beach working" photo.

Ain't gonna happen, people.

Not judging you. It's just me.

Still...it blows my mind the personal stuff some put on display to the entire Internet world.

Let some sh*t remain a mystery.

Even "sharing" in these emails is a stretch for this guy who guards his privacy. Lol

Here's where it gets interesting...

Dan Kennedy has a personal disdain for computers and electronic devices in general. But that doesn't mean he doesn't leverage Internet marketing in his overall marketing strategy.

He's made an empire from promoting his informational courses and books online. And he uses social media very effectively during online product launches.

So is he talking out of both sides of his mouth? No.

1. Dan focuses his time doing what only he can do.  He leaves the rest to his team.

2. Dan is an absolute Spartan when it comes to time. No interruptions and discipline define his working mindset.

On interruptions...

He's textbook old-school. Cell phones or email are verboten.

He'll answer a landline phone 1-2 hours a week, but those hours are scheduled.

His preferred mode of communication is the fax...both for employees and clients.

Before you jump in to judge, listen to his explanation:

"With each easier, faster means of communicating, the quantity of dumb, junk communication has multiplied. Because sending an email is so easy and doesn't even require the labor of walking over to the fax machine, people send emails any time they have a brain fart...Again, you may or may not want or need to mirror me."

Yeah, a bit archaic and over-the-top even for my taste -- but tough to dispute his reasoning.

On discipline...

Wait'll you hear this: Dan's secretary - who does NOT work in his home office - sorts through all his faxes, mail, phones messages, etc. and sends him only the most urgent via fax.

He reads them on his time frame...not the minute they are delivered.

So what does all this have to do with social media?

If your business model is built on the 80-20 rule (20% of your time is responsible for 80% of your revenue)...then liking, commenting, or searching for the perfect meme better be bringin' in a helluva profit for it to own a significant amount of time in your day.

Granted, social media is not a fad; it's not going anywhere.

And your business has to have a social presence.

It all comes down to focus.

So do I practice what I preach or am I just blowin' smoke?

...I read my email twice during office hours. I have two assistants who sift through my business emails, handle what they can and only forward those to me what I absolutely have to answer myself.

...I don't do any any social media stuff myself. My staff does all the posting and paid Facebook advertising for both businesses. Cheryl is very active in the Facebook private groups for Infusionsoft because she has to stay up on all that's going on.

...I abhor multi-tasking. Probably because I suck at it.

...Technology makes me cranky. Probably because I suck at it.

I'm sure I've probably pissed off some of you...not my intention.

If you Unsubscribe from these "Contrarian" emails, I'll just assume my outspokenness annoys you...or you've gotten all you need from me.

But I hope you'll stick around for a daily dose of realism in a world of "experts" promising the moon and making it seem easy as hell to run a successful business.

Ain't easy - but I sure love it!

Wanna talk?

Later!
