How To Come Up With (Lots of) Email Topics

/By: bmsteam

- June 26, 2018 -

Of all the responses to my daily emails that I get, this by far is the most common:

How in the heck do you come up with so many email topics?

Along with two more related questions about the "unconventional advice" given in yesterday's email:

Can I have someone ghost write for me?
And...do I really have to write an email every day?

Geez, so I have to give up all my trade secrets?

Just kidding. I have no trade secrets...I'm pretty much a what-you-see-is-what-you-get sorta guy.

Just a lot of trial and error. And when I find something that works, I generally stick with it until it doesn't.

Pretty simple, right?

So let's have a little fun today and dig in.

How do I come up with new topics every day?

I don't have the time of day to spend hours and hours researching topics that have already been beat to death.

Neither do you.

But I'm curious by nature. A people watcher. An observer.

So my internal antenna is always up...

...while walking my dog Rosy.

...while golfing. Damn annoying because it messes with my swing.

...while watching/reading the news. Mostly sports and stocks.

...while watching TV. Talked about that in yesterday's email.

...while hanging with family and friends. And good "Remember when...?" stories come up.

Anything that can be turned into a business or marketing lesson.

Once an idea hits me, I can usually remember it until I'm in front of my yellow legal pad...real high-tech 🙂

If I want to record it, I use an app on my phone called Voxer (works like a walkie-talkie) and just send myself a message.

Do I have to write emails myself or can someone else ghostwrite as me?

Here's the thing. Copywriting is simply conversing in print.

And most effective if your readers feel like you are talking to them personally.

So, sure!

...If they can write like you talk: Are you a fast-talker? Slow talker? Use big words? Dry sense of humor? Use 4-letter words? (guilty)

...If they know your stories, your history, your hobbies.

...If they know your idiosyncrasies and phrases you use a lot.

"Point made, Art - but I am NOT a writer. I can't do this!"

I totally get it. You know...when Cheryl and I first started Barron Marketing, we wrote articles, blogs, emails with proper grammar.

They were informative. Tons of value. Very well-written. SEO'd perfectly.

And boring as hell.

They had my signature on them, and they sounded nothing like me.

I talk fast. I talk loud. I use a fair share of 4-letter words when I get loud and fast. I don't bull shit...ever.

So it seemed logical to write like I talk.

How else are people going to get to know who I am, what I stand for, and why they should want to work with our team?

Still think you can't do it? Record yourself talking off the cuff about topics. Don't censor yourself. Have someone transcribe it and clean it up.

Next excuse?

Guaranteed...it'll feel hard at first. And the emails may not be great.

But it gets easier. More natural. And you'll get better.

Be transparent and let people see the evolution. They'll relate to you even more.

Do I have to write an email every day?

Nope. Not unless you don't want more sales.

...out of sight, out of mind.

We appreciate all our subscribers. I appreciate YOU.

Thanks for spending a few minutes most weekdays reading my ramblings.

...and that ain't no bull.

If we can help in any way, you know the drill.
