The #1 success robber is boredom.
As entrepreneurs, we make up 10% of the world who lead rather than follow. We are the sole providers for ourselves, our families, and our staff. That’s a lot of responsibility on our shoulders.
We all chose the life of a business owner because of the high we get from being completely independent. No boss telling us what we can and cannot do. The fruits of our labor go to us alone...because we earned it.
It’s easy to get amnesia and forget why we got into business – and boredom is the trigger.
When you’re bored, all your creativity, energy, and laser focus critical for growing your business are zapped.
It's like a virus in your brain - makes you feel de-powered. It's exhausting.
So the real challenge is to identify the areas where you are bored...and then re-frame, reinvent, and re-energize by focusing on what you love doing.
What you focus on always expands...
Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich author, said (and I paraphrase) what you think and believe and confidently expect will come into your experience...maybe not tomorrow but it will come.
Failure cannot be an option, and quitting cannot be part of your vocabulary.
So back to boredom. Have you ever noticed that when you're bored, you start to complain?
You've heard it from your kids when they whine "There's nothing to do!" You promptly hand them a list of all the chores you can think of and...
Hmm...
What are you complaining about these days? What is eating at you day in and day out? Are you stressed out because of a staff issue? Or your clients don’t show up for appointments, or your printer is constantly on the fritz. The list goes on and on.
Cheryl is my barometer. She’s a reactor and sometimes whines - not complainin’, just sayin’ 🙂 But when she complains, I’ve learned to listen because she’s usually spot on. When something gets to the level where it's causing her enough stress that she voices it, then I know that something needs attention NOW – these are the “red-hot, right-now, I-need-help” things.
Those issues now become our focuses, our goals for taking our business to the next level…because if they aren’t addressed, we get stuck. And a stuck business is a dead business.
Because the more we complain about the vendor who is always messing up the order or the client who is always late with paying their bill, we are literally programming ourselves to look for more that’s wrong with them.
It seems that there is a growing trend that advocates NOT setting goals because it sets one up for failure. Hogwash. I couldn’t disagree with that idea more.
The late Zig Ziglar always talked about how important it was to daily set goals.
And the late Stephen Covey talked about focusing on the BIG ROCKS. Focus on the activities that will create immediate cash flow, on the new ideas that will get your customers excited, on the appointments with key influencers who will create a whole new stream of leads for you.
Don't just "think" about your goals - write them down. When you physically write something down and you focus on it, you’re telling your unconscious mind to start looking for solutions for reaching those goals.
I get ribbed a lot for my stacks of yellow legal pads - but, hey they work for me. I know exactly which pad has the headline for a paid ad I wrote for a client in May of 2010 that brought him $25,769.28 during a Labor Day PPC campaign.
It’s one thing to set a goal – it’s another thing to create plans – but the real "take it to the bank" success comes from taking action.
What you focus on always, always expands...
Carpe Diem – seize the day!
