Every Business Needs a "Sam"

In the movie Casino (1995), directed by Martin Scorsese, there is a spot-on and hilarious scene about blueberry muffins.

Sam "Ace" Rothstein (played by Robert De Niro) oversees the day-to-day operations of a casino in Las Vegas.

In Vegas, everybody's gotta watch everybody else.

Since the players are looking to beat the casino, the dealers are watching the players.

The box men are watching the dealers.

The floor men are watching the box men.

The pit bosses are watching the floor men.

The shift bosses are watching the pit bosses.

The casino manager is watching the shift bosses.

In the "blueberry scene" Sam explains that he's got to let the people he employs know that he’s watching “all the details all the time, that there is not one single thing I will not catch.”

Cue...the classic muffin scene:

"I don't care how long it takes. Put an equal amount in each muffin."

Every business needs a "Sam."

The person who makes sure there are the same number of blueberries in every muffin.

The person who's got to wear the quality control hat.

The person who wears that hat like it was made to fit...not a forced-fit.

I never wanted to be that person.

Not my forte. I don't have the patience for it. My eyes glaze over and my brain wants to explode when conversations veer toward techy details.

But it's how Cheryl's brain works...

She can't help seeing the inconsistencies in the copy.

The gaps in a sales funnel.

The "what-if" scenarios that need to be accounted for in programming the automation.

People, I'm not just talking about typos here. Important, but small potatoes in the big picture.

+ These are "catches" that determine your reputation.

+ "Gotchas" that can cost you clients and revenue.

In the last 24-hours she spotted the wrong form code on the wrong page.

And when submitting another form, darned if she thought to test by not filling in the "Name" field just to see what happened...

...and found an "oops." The field hadn't been programmed to be required.

The developer fixed both quickly...and then was nicely reminded about how the code needed to be triple-checked before it was passed on for final testing.

The devil's in the details...

Will mistakes and oversights happen in the future?

You bet. Nobody's perfect. We don't expect them to be.

But the team knows that we're on top of the details.

Who's the person who's in charge of quality control in your business?

Do you have the right people, systems, procedures, and resources in place to ensure top notch quality control throughout the entire sales process?

Get that part right. It's a big deal.

Or you can just put us on berry-counting duty.

Have a good one!
