Basketball and Burning Bridges

So how 'bout those NBA Finals?

After butting heads for four consecutive years, the rivalry between the Warriors and the Cavs makes for riveting tv.

But then rivalries are what makes the sport great.

Remember the epic matchups between the Celtics and the Lakers of the '80s the "golden era" of the NBA?

Larry Bird and Magic Johnson's legendary love-hate relationship even inspired the movie "Best of Enemies."

And then you've got the rivalry between the Chicago Bulls' Michael Jordan and the Bad Boys of the Detroit Pistons putting the screws to the Bulls with the Jordan Rules in the late '80s.

You could feel the hatred between Jordan and Isaiah Thomas.

These two went from a kissing match to a pissing match...friends and competitors who broke apart and went years without speaking.

God, I loved the '80s!

And by the looks of the dustups on the court in games 1 and 2 of the finals going on now, you'd think the guys were mortal enemies.

But times have changed.

Yeah, there's that weird thing going on between LeBron James and Steph Curry because of Curry's quick rise in the league...so they're definitely not holding hands and singing "Kumbaya" at the moment.

But then you have LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Paul doing the ultimate spring break thing and riding together on a giant banana boat.

Sounds like fun to me!

Friends off the court. Fierce competitors on the court.

Sparks are bound to fly in game 3 tomorrow night.

Healthy egos all around...

Look, we're all competitive...with ourselves and our industry peers.

It's normal and why you've chosen to work for yourself.

...you want to snag those big deals.

...you want to be recognized as an authority in your field.

Hey, we've all got healthy egos.

In all my businesses, the internal office dynamic was a lot like dealing with a team of players on the basketball court all vying for play time.

My brokers all wanted the deals with the best commissions.

The women in the office...well, hell if I know what caused them to be at odds. Lol (yeah, I'm clueless at times with this stuff.)

But if I just stayed out of their clashes for the most part, they worked things out between themselves.

And became better at what they did because of that competitive spirit.

Competition among your peers?

Don't burn bridges.

It's easy to get feathers ruffled when dealing with your competitors.

I've been probably TOO transparent with my feelings toward real estate agents...they don't understand wholesale real estate and things can go south real fast when they enter my world.

...if I forget about the big picture.

It's easy to think that burning bridges doesn't matter.

"If a business relationship doesn't work out, I'll just move on to the next one."

The problem with this thinking is that the very people you end up burning could end up becoming your biggest nightmare.

You never know where your next potential customer comes from...or not.

So if you're like me, I have tell myself every day:

...take a deep breath.

...this too shall pass.

And I hear my mother whispering in my ear what she always told me as a kid: "Arthur, if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all."

Geez, playing nice is hard sometimes 🙂
