I was never part of the sports crowd in high school. Yep, I was the band geek.
Loved playing trumpet and took lessons all through high school.
Would even skip school to catch a bus to downtown Philly where I'd jam with some of the jazz greats...but that's a story for another day 🙂
So it was a no-brainer to major in music in college. My dream was to be a professional musician.
Since I'd never have the quarterback vibe working for me, I figured the whole musician thing would appeal to the females!
Turns out, I couldn't pass theory class after three humiliating tries...so I switched to business. Yeah, took the safe route...don't regret it but tough to give up the dream.
So when I was invited to take first chair with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in their Community Side-By-Side performance...well, it was a real honor.
It was totally unexpected which made it all the more sweet.
See back in school, I thought I was a pretty good jazz player...
And I know I could have gone professional...except I couldn't count.
Couldn't read music for the life of me.
With jazz, there really aren't any rules you have to follow. Mostly improvisation and riffing off a common theme.
It appears a contrarian nature is in my DNA...lol
Years ago after moving to Pittsburgh to open my mortgage company, I started taking trumpet lessons with local legend Jack McKee...and right away he broke me down as a beginner.
All of a sudden I was learning why I'd always had so much trouble reading music.
With jazz, I was able to rely on my ear and make it up as I went.
But being successful in most things -- including business -- requires structure and discipline.
So for all the years I took lessons with Jack (and my next teacher after Jack retired) I got up early every single morning and practiced for an hour before leaving for the office.
Never missed a day.
I was the only student able to complete a book of range exercises that required hitting everything between a low C and a triple high C...sorry, if that's sounds like Greek to you.
It took me years of practice but...
My mentors took a complete idiot to first chair in the PSO.
Where in your business is structure and discipline lacking?
Or do you just need to just get out of your way? You know, get your head out of your a** and go back to the basics.
As you can guess...I've committed to sending daily emails (taking Sundays off though.)
I needed to add that discipline to my day, to our business...
I needed to get back to the basics of just communicating with you because I'm guessing you're facing similar challenges as a biz owner.
My challenge to you today is to take a minute and figure out where you can go back to the basics and add some structure to how you're running your business.
