I didn't watch the Olympics this time around.
Too much going on between my dad's failing health and trying to keep up with work.
And men in tights skating reminds me of men in tights dancing...so there you go.
But there was a name that kept popping up in conversations.
A guy who was in Olympic news in the early 80's.
A guy who's beat testicular cancer and a brain tumor. He was adopted. Never got any taller than 5' 4". His signature move was a backflip.
And he has less hair than I do LOL
His name is Scott Hamilton...and he's one hell of a guy who just doesn't quit.
My kind of guy.
If you haven't read his new book Finish First put it on your list. Seriously inspiring.
In any case, here are my Cliff Notes and how it relates to all of us as business owners winning.
Come on, admit it...we all want to be #1 because #2 sucks.
We're human. We tend to hang on to our failures.
I get it...but by the time you get done losing enough, you’re not afraid of it anymore.
After watching two careers die and starting over again at age 50, I've gotten to the point where I just say, "Next? Bring in on! Hit me with your best shot."
People, we've all messed up plenty of times. Life goes on.
Scott said that at his skating academy, the first thing new students (no matter the age) learn is how to fall and how to get up.
Universities don't teach that to undergrads...but the school of hard knocks does.
+ You don’t need the latest software.
+ You don't need to go to every conference. Too much information. Too much distraction. Too many shiny bullets...technology and tactics. Expensive.
+ You don't need a larger team than you're able to manage just because so-and-so does.
Just show up...power through when you feel exhausted.
Because you will. Running a business is not for the faint of heart.
Figure out where your weaknesses are and get past it.
In Hamilton's words: Be the first one on the ice, last one off.
You know, if I was to go back and relive certain times in my life where I made bonehead decisions...
Or where life handed me stuff out of my control (the real estate implosion and the death of my mortgage business)...
It would be non-productive and totally unhealthy.
“But don’t you remember who I was?” Yeah...it's easy to go there.
And the few times I find myself looking back, I have to remind myself: I don’t care where my competitors are and who’s coming up on my tail…I’m just going to just keep plowing ahead.
Slay that dragon every day. Small wins add up.
There's a quote from Scott that kind of puts everything in perspective:
“I’m a short, bald, half-neutered, chemo-radiated, surgically-repaired, retired male figure-skater of unknown ethnic origin. That’s a lot of crummy stuff, but it works for me.”
If we can help you leverage the time and resources you have to move your business forward...schedule a free consult and we'll come up with a plan.
In the meantime...grab a cup of coffee and a Kit-Kat and keep going.
