The Story of a Wise Sushi Bar Owner

- January 24, 2018 -

I heard a story the other day...and it was too good to not pass on.

A colleague of ours, Dan Bussius, and his wife often go to their favorite sushi bar.

One night they found themselves sitting next to the owner at the sushi bar. After a few minutes, the owner said to Dan, "I see you in here often. Why do you come here?"

It struck Dan as kind of an odd question but he politely answered, "We come because the service is good - but mostly because the fish here is fresher than any other sushi restaurant we've ever eaten at."

The owner smiled and said, "I own this place."

They all got to talking and the owner shared his story:

Originally from Korea, he was an engineer and moved to the US.

He couldn't speak English. But he worked hard and taught himself to read and speak the language...and soon after he found a job with a company as an engineer.

He worked hard there and after becoming one of their top engineers, he left to start his own manufacturing company.

He struggled for years but realized all the wealthy people played golf.

So he joined the most prestigious golf club in the area and showed up there on a regular basis.

He noticed that when businessmen went to the bar after a round of golf, they'd tip a few dollars.

So he decided he'd do the same...

But he'd order a ginger ale and tip with a $20 bill.

Every single time.

The bartenders started to get to know him.

Those same businessmen took note and wondered who this gentleman was who tipped so well.

They wondered who the bartenders liked so much that they'd serve him first before anyone else...including themselves.

Out of curiosity, they asked him to play golf with them. He wasn't very good, but he was respectful and enjoyable to talk to.

Eventually they started giving him work and sending him referrals.

His business grew.

He began to land clients like Toshiba and other big brands.

He became very wealthy.

He bought a yacht and learned how to sail it as a way to relax from the stress of work.

Over time he got bored and decided he wanted to interact more with people instead of spending time in meetings.

So he bought a sushi restaurant...and there he sat next to Dan telling his story.

And the advice he gave Dan is what I'm passing on to you:

"Go where the people you want to be like spend their free time. Then, start going there on a regular basis. Become someone that everyone must know."

And the single most powerful way to become someone that your email followers must know is to get them to engage more with you.

Talk to them in a way that they want to get to know you and eventually work with you...and perhaps send referrals your way.

Just like the sushi owner in Dan's story.

Check out the Engagement Maximizer from our Campaign Recipe Series. This is for you if...

  • You've wanted an Email Preference Center of your own but just haven't had the time to create one.
  • You know you should be pruning the Unengaged from your list but don't have the time, tools, or know-how to get it all started.
  • You don't want to pay a lot for an expert to do everything - but you know you're losing money every day because your leads and customers aren't engaging with you.

Our Campaign Recipe Series was created for Infusionsoft users who need help with the campaign strategy and the framework - but are ok with adding the finishing touches to make it their own.

(FYI: the price for this will never be lower and we're including a time-limited bonus campaign. After this week, either the price will go up or the bonus will go away.)

Now I'm hungry for sushi and itching to get on the golf course 🙂

Make it a great day!
