Fresh out of college, I had just landed my first job as an investment broker.
I had no money and was driving my grandfather's Delta 88. It was a big old green monster lol
To avoid embarrassment, I parked the car three blocks away and walked to the firm every day.
And I determined then and there that my goal was to make enough to buy a BMW asap. I still drive one today, probably just to remind me of how hard I worked in those early days to pay cash for it.
One day, my boss walked up to me and said, "Art, brokers with beards make money. Brokers without beards make more money."
Message received. If I was going to land the big players, I had to look the part.
So I shaved the beard. Bought new suits (eventually had them tailor made.) Bought my dream car.
And it worked. Why? The phrase "the clothes make the man" was true.
Looking good gave me a confidence that at first wasn't there but soon became like a second skin.
(I also listened to Tony Robbins cassettes non-stop but that's another story.)
I'm no longer in the investment industry. No longer a mortgage broker. The tailor made suits have been gathering dust in my closet for ten years. Every once in a while I think of my tailor - he was a real character 🙂
Nowadays, while Cheryl runs the day to day operations of Barron Marketing, I'm on the road meeting with prospects who are interested in either selling or buying rental properties with rehab potential.
And let me tell you, they don't give jack whether I wear a suit and tie...in fact, wearing one would make me look like a real estate agent.
And in this business, my sellers do not want to deal with real estate agents - that's why they call me.
My point is this...you have to know your audience.
And knowing your target market is part of having a strategic marketing plan.
Sure, marketers without a plan make money every day.
But...marketers with a plan make MORE.
We've put together an amazing Marketing Planner for you. It's brand new for 2018 and very comprehensive without all the fluff. And we'd love to gift it to you just for being faithful readers and customers.
