Debunking Work-Life Balance

/By: bmsteam

- June 7, 2018 -

Put a business decision in front of me...and I can push the red or green button without thinking much about it.

But hit me with a decision that's going to change my life...and my Libran indecisiveness kicks in.

For example, I've been sitting on prime real estate property on a golf course in North Carolina for the past 25 years.

Paid cash for it. Haven't built on it...yet.

My golfing buddies are there in their nice retirement homes asking when I'm coming.

I go back and forth in my head...

Golf year round! Can life get any better?

No winter! Hmm, but I really like the change of seasons.

Just have two homes! Property taxes will be through the roof...I can kiss retirement goodbye...no time for golf...just pick one place, Art and move on!

And so it goes. Lol

Entrepreneurs believe in seasons - employees believe in balance.

Ahh, work/life balance.

That illusive balance that is every employee’s most coveted dream.

Their most sought-after treasure.

Their holy grail.

But successful entrepreneurs know that balance isn't achievable.

Yep, that's what I said...

And I fully expect to get push back on this one.

Just give me a few minutes...keep an open mind and hear me out.

As an entrepreneur, you're never going to find that same balance between work and life that you might have had when you got a regular paycheck signed by the big boss.

As an employee...

+ The line between work and home was more definitive. As a business owner, it gets blurred a bit more especially if you work from home.

+ When you were on vacation, you were on vacation. As a business owner, it's a challenge to totally disconnect thanks to iphones, ipads and WiFi.

+ You had a job description - you knew your role. As a business owner, pick a hat, any hat.

Instead of seeking balance...what if you focused more on priorities?

What if you decided what is most important to you right now...today, this week, this month?

What if you accepted the fact that your life (business and personal all mixed together) is just a rotation of seasons?

And accept the fact that yeah, if you choose to excel in one area of life...others are going to temporarily suffer.

...so when your kid's b-ball game runs overtime, a business meeting may have to wait.

...when a video conference call gets jacked up because your client is having trouble with his online connection, your wife may need to hold dinner.

...when your anniversary happens to fall on a day when you'd really like to get one more deal closed, you forget about the deal.

Instead of fighting for an unachievable balance, you recognize...

...that one thing will always have to take precedence over the others.

Now do you see why work/live "balance" just isn't in the cards for you?

But freedom to choose what is important minute by minute, day by day belongs to you, the entrepreneur.

And that's pretty damn cool!
