Now it seems like a lifetime ago.
When I was active in the network marketing and MLM arena, I never missed the monthly pep rally.
Top sellers were recognized...usually the same as the month before.
Another “rags to riches” story was told...always ending with “And YOU can, too!”
I knew I was good at sales. So what was the problem?
There was no logical reason why I couldn’t build a massive downline like so-and-so.
I worked just as hard as the top earners did.
So I'd vow to myself:
I … MUST … SHOW … THE … PLAN … TO … MORE … PEOPLE
I … MUST … TRY … H A R D E R
I M U S T
I MUST MUST MUST!
I would repeat this to myself over and over again.
In the three years or so that Cheryl and I drank that kool-aid, it never worked like promised.
Sure, we had some huge months…
And so we poured more money into more gadgets and widgets and courses that guaranteed more conversions.
More team members. More residual payments.
It was like gambling. It was an addiction...next month will be the turning point.
You do just well-enough to be convinced to stay in the game...because you were someone else’s downline - and they needed you to stay addicted.
When in fact...all it did was drain my bank account and give me indigestion.
So why couldn’t I achieve what my upline was doing?
It didn’t work even 5% as well as they said.
And all the pep talks and will power in the world could not change that.
All I accomplished was to prove (in every possible way) that their System was broken. It was flawed.
I’d tell myself the same thing over and over again. The conversation in my head went like this:
“Someday, you’ll have a break-through. That missing piece of the puzzle will appear - and all the dots will finally connect themselves. That brick wall that you’re pounding on right now...it’s not a really a brick wall. It’s just drywall. You’re going to punch right through it, and nothing will stop you from reaching the top.”
I assumed the “missing piece” was the one thing that I was doing (or not doing) that was keeping me from “Going Platinum.”
Eventually I figured it out: I was going to QUIT trying to “Go Platinum” entirely... and just go do something else.
I couldn’t imagine that at the time because “QUIT” was a four-letter word that was not in my vocabulary. Still isn’t.
Here’s what I learned:
It’s not a strategy. It’s not a system.
Yeah, for some people it IS the answer. For some who have barely tried at all, MUST TRY HARDER is better than doing nothing.
But for most people – especially people who are almost always industrious, hard-working folks – it gets you only more of the same.
If ” I … MUST … TRY … H A R D E R ” is what you tell yourself – if being 10% better in five different areas is your plan – stop deceiving yourself.
You think you’re pounding on a brick wall, but it’s really just bust-through wallboard.
It’s time to recognize that WILL POWER is not the problem, and it’s rarely a solution.
The solution is to ask youself this:
What are you actually focusing on for Q2 of 2018? And what 1% of your world are you going to SYSTEMATICALLY focus 500% extra effort on compared to last quarter?
And what are you going to QUIT doing entirely?
That’s called leverage.
