If It Quacks Like a Duck...

Remember the ads for Nivea "Bio-Slim Complex"...the body lotion that claimed that with regular use, it would reduce body size? That sure would be "easier" than good old diet and exercise!

Well, Nivea chose to settle to avoid a lawsuit and stopped making the product.

And this one...Splenda got sued by Equal, another alternative sugar competitor because Spenda claimed that it was “Made from sugar so it tastes just like sugar.”

Equal claimed that Splenda was leading customers to believe that its product was healthier than other sugars substitutes. Splenda had to change its marketing slogan and advertising campaign to “no calorie Sweetener.”

Turns out it's made from chemicals and fillers...and can cause weight gain.

But my favorite is Activia. Dannon claimed that Activia "helps prevent colds and flu and one daily serving of Activia could relieve irregularity” AND “it helps with slow intestinal transit time.”

What the heck is "intestinal transit time"? lol

In the end, Dannon had to pay $45 million in damages for claiming basically that Activia promotes regular bathroom trips.

...but this pales in comparison to one particular claim.

It all started this morning when I had a few minutes and read an email from a well-known marketer (who will remain nameless.)

He open up with stating that 99% of the frustration in your business is actually because of just ONE thing.

But he doesn't say what that one thing is...because he wants you to watch his video.

Then he says "Finally that ONE THING can be completely obliterated by pressing a button.

And that his video shows you how to kill that frustration forever.

Maybe it was the pot of coffee I've already consumed that's firing me up, but this stuff makes me livid.

And of course now I had to watch the blasted video...

Turns out the ONE THING that frustrates business owners is a huge, ugly digital wall that we're trying to hopelessly climb over instead of doing what will make us money...which is selling.

(All while cheesy over-produced visuals are illustrating this.)

And this digital wall is made of brick of overwhelm and confusion...

+ How do I build a web page?

+ How do I make my order button appear magically at the end of my video?

+ How do I make the video on my sales page play automatically?

+ How do I get one of those countdown timers on my page?

+ How do I know if my ads are working in the first place?

You know where this is going right?

After pontificating on the giant wall of overwhelm and painting the bleakest of pictures...

This well-known marketer states (and I quote) that "the wall is coming down. And it's coming down today. And it is coming down forever!"

Because (music blaring) they have come up with a "revolutionary, break-through tool that will let you press a button and have a complete soup-to-nuts marketing campaign up and running and totally automated...in minutes...and that tool is called "blah blah blah."

...and I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell!

That kind of advertising is what causes hard-working biz owners to have false expectations and false hope.

And insulting. So why do people still buy in to this junk?

People...running a business in the technical age we live in is hard...and no EASY BUTTON will automatically ensure success.

Otherwise everyone would be making boatloads of cash from their easy chairs.

To turn this rant around and leave you with something constructive...

+ Watch for this kind of "easy" "one size fits all" marketing. If it sounds slick, it is slick...and not in a good way.

+ Keep moving forward. One step at a time. Do that one thing consistently every day that will make the most impact on your goals...like a domino effect.

+ Done is better than none.

+ Version 2 is better than version 1.

+ Find someone you can trust and let them help, mentor, or guide you.

I'll be back tomorrow 🙂
