What Every Good Soldier Knows

- January 26, 2018 -

Folks, I've got to warn you...I'm a bit cranky today.

I'll be straight-up honest with you. This soldier is god-awful weary.

Yeah, yeah...I must think I'm still 25 or something and can keep chuggin' along on an empty tank LOL

When I was a young buck at the first brokerage firm that hired me, I worked from the office 6 days and 4 nights a week.

Month after month...

In those days, there wasn't security in place like brokerages have today so I came and went as I pleased...working the phone whenever I could get a hold of my prospects and clients.

And that meant evenings and weekends.

I was hungry and had one goal...to be a millionaire by the time I was 30.

Stupid but hungry and motivated nevertheless.

Finally after at least a year of this insane drive to meet my self-imposed goals, my boss Jack pulled me aside and said something I'll never forget...

"Every good soldier knows when to rest."

He forced me to take a vacation...I can't remember but I think I went to the Bahamas for a week.

I totally unplugged and when I got back, I was mentally fresh and ready to continue conquering the world...one security transaction at a time.

And darn it if I didn't do it all over again...same "never-quit" focus.

I still have the same problem. Don't ask me why...I'm cranky today, remember?

But after three (ok, four) decades of facing the day with a shot of caffeine and a bring-it-on, hard-nosed, never-say-die Philly/Pittsburgh inbred work ethic...

I at least know the signs now and automatically hear Jack screaming, "Dammit Art...rest, soldier, rest!"

We all have our own set of go-to excuses when we hear that voice telling us to take a break...

+ I'll have time to sleep when I'm dead.

+ It is what it is...next month/year, we'll be in a better position financially to take a vacation. Hmm...we all know how those months morph into years.

+ I've got four more kids who need to go to college! "Honey, remind me again why we had SO many kids?"

So what's my plan?

Sleep is always good.

Not working is better...

Golf and beer fit the bill just about right. It's too cold for golf yet in Pittsburgh...but a cold one isn't a respecter of seasons 🙂

Where are you on the "I'm Good" to "I've Reached My Limit!" spectrum?

If like me...you find yourself not able to focus, snapping at people about little stuff, dropping the ball on big stuff...lemme tell ya, it's time for a break sooner.

Sooner rather than later.

And speaking of not waiting...Monday is the last day to save 25% on the "Engagement Maximizer" in our Campaign Recipe Series.
