My Public Retraction Regarding Social Media

/By: bmsteam

Bobby Wilder, the head football coach at Old Dominion University tells his recruits: "If you're in love with Twitter, go someplace else."

He has a strict ban; if you are on the team, you are off social media - period - for the years you attend the school.

The story goes that as he began his freshman classes, one lineman tweeted: "Signing off. See you in about 5 years."

If you’ve read my blog posts for any length of time, you know that I am not a raving fan of social media.

And if every business owner spent as much time working on their marketing funnel as they do twittering and posting, they’d actually see some ROI.

Now, that’s not to say that we don’t have a solid presence in the social media realm – it’s a must in today’s business culture.

But after a bad experience with a “social media expert” loading our company Twitter account with followers who were clearly in the porn industry (which we then had to spend days getting rid of them) I was definitely singing “We are never, ever, ever, ever getting back together.”

It’s nothing personal – it’s just that anything that doesn’t fit in with my 80-20 Rule (80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts) doesn’t get much love…

I’ve seen too many businesses fall into the trap of justifying hours spent "marketing" in Facebook, Twitter, YouTube…and Instagram, the newest attraction in social media.

Note: Instagram, enjoy your celebrity status now because you will be replaced by a younger and hotter flavor of the month/year. Anyone remember Google+ anymore?

If you’re spending more than 15 minutes a day in any single marketing strategy, it’s not a good use of your time - unless it’s bringing in 80% of your revenue.

But…I digress. I promised a retraction.

As much as it pains me to say it, here goes: “I kinda, sorta take back most of the mean things I've said about social media being a complete waste of time and money-sucker!”

AND THIS IS WHY

With products like Sync2CRM, you can now put the right Facebook ad in front of the right person at exactly the right time by syncing the data in your CRM (Infusionsoft is what we use and recommend) with custom Facebook audiences.

No more wasted ad spend. No more uploading and downloading CSV files.

After seeing first-hand what the integration between Sync2CRM and Infusionsoft actually can do…I fell down, kissed the ground, and vowed to give social media another shot to redeem themselves in my ROI-obsessed mind.

Here's a short overview of the software with Kim Snyder, the creator...

BUT THE COUP DE GRAS WAS THEIR ANALYTICS FEATURE

I’m a numbers guy – if I can’t see data and measure outcomes from my efforts, forget it. Being able to measure performance with Syn2CRM’s reports, my last defense was kicked down.

And it fits into my 80-20 business model. Now that makes me happy!

My love affair with social media has just begun 🙂

Seize the day!
